‘Gamaguchi’ is a type of bag that gets its name from the mouth of the bag, which opens wide like a toad’s mouth. The origin of the Gamaguchi dates back to the Meiji period (19th century), when Wasuke Yamashiroya, who traveled throughout Europe and America as a government merchant, brought it back from France. A wallet with a pouch is said to be especially auspicious, as ”出したお金が帰る(カエル) meaning the money you spend comes back to you”. It has been popular among Japanese for a long time probably because of the ease of use that opens easily and its high level of practicality. This Gamaguchi wallet is made in Kyoto. The base colour is light pink with a Ume (plum blossoms) pattern. Ideal gift for your friend or yourself!
