Kokeshi are traditional Japanese wooden dolls, handcrafted with a simple form — typically without arms or legs — yet rich in cultural meaning and artistic beauty. There are two main types: 伝統こけし (Traditional Kokeshi) – A folk art originating in Japan’s Tohoku region during the late Edo period, created using time-honored techniques passed from master to apprentice. 創作こけし (Creative Kokeshi) – Modern interpretations shaped by each artist’s unique vision, using original techniques. This style gained popularity after 1947, with exceptional works celebrated annually by the Prime Minister’s Award since 1954. This 近代創作こけし (modern creative Kokeshi) is called 願い Negai, meaning wish in Japanese. Created by the award-winning workshop 卯三郎 Usaburo, Negai captures a sense of joy and warmth. With her round form, radiant smile, and flowing black hair adorned with a bright yellow ribbon, she wears a soft pink kimono decorated with delicate floral patterns. Hand-carved and hand-painted, Negai embodies both the charm of modern Kokeshi design and the refinement of Japanese craftsmanship.
